Vegetarian restaurants in Jersey: where to get a real choice

Where vegetarians get real choice in Jersey: curry houses, Chinese, Italian and fine dining with proper meat-free mains, plus the Parmesan question.

    SafePlate · Published

In short: 134 venues on SafePlate label at least one vegetarian dish. For the widest choice, head to the curry houses, Chinese kitchens and Italian restaurants, where vegetarian runs through the whole menu. For a special meal, Ocean Restaurant and Longueville Manor have proper vegetarian mains.

Most vegetarians know the drill: one option, and it's mushroom risotto or goat's cheese tart. These are the places where you get to choose. If you're vegan, our vegan restaurants guide is the better starting point.

    Indian: the most choice

    • Indian Ocean (St Helier): vegetable and paneer versions of the bhuna, dansak and more (£15.99), plus aloo gobi (£6.99).
    • Saffron (St Helier): vegetable assam, bhuna, dansak and dopiaza.
    • Chutneys (St Helier): aloo chaat, bhindi bhajee, brinjal bhajee and Bombay aloo. Build a thali-style spread from the sides.
    • Noya Shapla (St Brelade): vegetable versions of most of its curry styles, many also labelled vegan.

    Chinese

    • Lotus House (St Helier): aubergine in black bean sauce (£7.30), Szechuan aubergine (£6.80) and fried udon three ways (£8).
    • Man's Garden (St Lawrence): more than 30 vegetarian-labelled dishes, including aubergine in black bean sauce.

    Italian

    • La Cantina (St Helier): lumache with cavolo nero and walnut (£16.50), burrata with cherry tomato (£12.50), and spinach and mozzarella arancini (£8.50).
    • Franky's (St Helier): vegetarian pastas such as fettuccine arrabbiata and Napolitano (£15.95), and a tofu kung po.

    Special occasions

    • Ocean Restaurant (St Brelade): hand-rolled tagliatelle with Jersey asparagus (£24) and an open Mediterranean vegetable lasagne with grilled goat's cheese (£28).
    • Longueville Manor (St Saviour): cèpe risotto and woodland mushroom pappardelle, alongside vegan mains such as a baked vegetable Wellington.
    • Bohemia (St Helier): aubergine katsu curry (£16.50) on the bar menu.

    Pubs and casual

    • Off The Rails (St Brelade): one of the longest vegetarian lists we have, including the Squeeky Greeky (grilled halloumi with piquillo peppers, £14.25).
    • The Goose (St Peter): grilled artichoke risotto and a vegan mezze plate.
    • The Portelet Inn (St Brelade): vegan curry, vegan pie and vegan pizza, which suit vegetarians too.

    The Parmesan question

Traditional Parmesan (Parmigiano Reggiano) is made with animal rennet, so strictly it isn't vegetarian. Plenty of dishes labelled vegetarian still list it, especially risottos and pastas. If that matters to you, ask whether the kitchen uses a vegetarian hard cheese. Also worth checking: stock in soups and risottos, gelatine in desserts, and anchovy in Caesar dressing.

V and VG aren't the same. SafePlate shows them separately: V is vegetarian and may contain dairy or egg, while VG is vegan.
